The military parade in Beijing officially marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. The guest list included Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un. But it was also an opportunity for President Xi Jinping to show off the country's arsenal.
The well-orchestrated parade began with troops of over 10,000 marching through Tiananmen Square. Fighter jets and helicopters flew in formations in the air. The parade ended with the sky filled with balloons and doves.

"The Chinese people are not afraid of violence and are independent and strong," Xi Jinping said in a speech.
Chinese officials said some weapons were on public display for the first time, including hypersonic missiles designed to strike ships at sea, AP reports.
Could be a mark against the USA
The missiles are considered important for the US, which has several military bases in the western Pacific. A medium-range missile that was displayed is called the "Guam killer" because it can hit US military bases on the Pacific island of the same name, writes the BBC.

Several media outlets are highlighting that one purpose of the demonstration is to make a point against the United States.
– It poses the question to the West, especially the US: are you really prepared to take on us? For example, in a conflict over Taiwan, Per Olsson, a researcher in defense economics at the Swedish Defense Research Institute FOI, told SvD earlier.
Laser weapons and robot wolves
Another novelty at the parade was the DF-61 intercontinental ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying nuclear warheads and striking long-range targets. China also displayed several AI-powered drones. Among them is the approximately 20-meter-long AJX-002 submarine drone, which looks like a narrow submarine and is believed to be used for surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

Other weapons that stood out were the LY-1 laser weapon, which is said to be able to burn or disable electronics and blind pilots, and the so-called "robot wolf," which is believed to be able to be used for a variety of purposes: From mine detection to hunting enemy soldiers, according to the BBC.
