The headline number: about 4% of GDP in goods flowing through
Working from the 2025 figures:
RublesRussian GDP (nominal, 2025)214.3 trillion InterfaxTotal retail trade turnover~61 trillion (55.2tn through November) TASSAll online retail11.5 trillion — 18.8% of total retail China.org.cnTop-3 marketplaces (WB, Ozon, Yandex Market)8.3–8.6 trillion TadviserWildberries + Ozon aloneroughly 8 trillion
Wildberries holds about 45% of the e-commerce market and Ozon 32% — so the two of them together are roughly 77% of everything bought online in Russia. IntelliNews
That puts them at around 3.5–4% of GDP in gross merchandise value. Which is enormous for two companies. For comparison, Amazon's US GMV is somewhere in the same neighbourhood relative to US GDP, and Amazon is considered a systemic piece of the American economy.
Luego se retracta y me dice:
The numbers that actually matter for the war
If you want to understand why these strikes hurt, GDP is the wrong denominator entirely. The right ones are:
~13% of all retail trade in Russia, food included
~25% of all non-food retail — non-food is about 52.5% of Russian retail, and that's where marketplaces dominate TASS
~78% of all e-commerce, which is the real one
That last figure is the strategic point. Russia didn't build a diverse online retail sector — it built two enormous funnels. Clothing, electronics, tools, appliances: for tens of millions of people, especially outside Moscow and Petersburg, that's not one shopping option among many, it's the shopping infrastructure. There's no Target or Best Buy to fall back on. Russia has just had its first decline in total number of physical shops in over two decades, with thousands closing in Moscow and St. Petersburg, and no major new international brand entered the country in Q1 2026. The physical retail alternative has been shrinking for four years. Forbes
So the honest framing: it's roughly 4% of GDP by transaction volume, about 1% by economic contribution — but it's something like 80% of a chokepoint. And in war, chokepoints matter more than percentages. Losing 10% of Wildberries' storage capacity doesn't remove 0.4% of GDP; it removes the ability of a quarter of the country's non-food retail to actually deliver anything for a while. The Moscow Times
