Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has been spying on EU institutions in Brussels for years

The Hungarian intelligence service has been using a secret spy network in Brussels for years. We reveal how Prime Minister Viktor Orbán operates with fake diplomats and moles within EU institutions. This was even done aggressively under the supervision of current European Commissioner Olivér Várhelyi.

A Hungarian working for the European Commission initially saw no problem in meeting every three or six months with his compatriot V.*. He was a diplomat at the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the European Union and officially worked on economic and financial dossiers. ‘He was a very likeable, intelligent man,’ says the Commission employee. ‘Of course, I already knew at the time that he was a Hungarian intelligence officer and that his job as a diplomat was just a cover.’

The meetings, usually in a Brussels park, took place between 2015 and 2017. Until V. presented the official with an official document that he had to sign. While still working for the Commission, he was to start working as a “secret agent” for the Hungarian intelligence service, the Információs Hivatal (IH), which means “information office”.

That was possible for a fee. But because V. knew from their previous conversations that money did not personally motivate his compatriot, he promised to support an organisation that was close to his heart. ‘We can find funding for it,’ he said, adding that the money would not, of course, come directly from the IH. ‘We’ll figure it out.’ Another Hungarian government agency would officially pay that invoice.

The Commission official was shocked and politely but firmly declined the offer. Not only did he dislike the way in which the intelligence service wanted to recruit him, with a signed document, but he also disliked the fact that, in his view, this was not in Hungary's interests, but rather in the interests of “a power clique, or even a single person”, referring to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He was also disturbed by the fact that, in his view, this would not be in Hungary's interests, but rather in those of “a power clique, or even a single person”, referring to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, his entourage and his far-right Fidesz party.

Months of investigation by De Tijd, together with Direkt36, a non-profit centre for investigative journalism in Hungary, the German collective Paper Trail Media, the German magazine Der Spiegel and the Austrian newspaper Der Standard, now reveal how Orbán's pawns, disguised as diplomats, are spying on EU institutions on Brussels soil.

We were able to speak to a whole range of well-informed sources, including insiders from the Hungarian intelligence service and permanent representation, as well as EU officials who had dealt with the spies themselves. They were not only asked to obtain and pass on confidential information such as meeting reports (in return for payment), but also to manipulate documents to the advantage of Orbán's government.

These aggressive espionage practices go beyond what is considered acceptable, especially for an EU Member State. Building such secret networks within European institutions is more commonly associated with hostile nations such as Russia or China. Russian interference in the European Parliament recently led to a criminal investigation.

Obtaining information through conversation is legal, but if a diplomat pays for information or has a document signed, they are violating the Vienna Convention, which governs diplomatic relations. This is according to Gerhard Conrad, former head of the EU's intelligence coordination service and former officer of the German intelligence service BND.

A decade ago, IH intelligence officers in Brussels began working undercover under the guise of diplomats, which offers them greater protection and freedom. It is a modus operandi for which countries such as Russia have long been notorious.

As conflicts between the Orbán government and the European Commission intensified, demand grew in Budapest for information that could only be obtained within EU institutions, including on media freedom and the budget. ‘The EU gradually became a target. When the government's rhetoric began to focus on Brussels, the bureaucracy there also gradually became a target of the IH,’ recalls a former senior Hungarian intelligence officer.

The “bilateral” Hungarian embassy in Belgium, located right next to the campus of the European School in Uccle, is not believed to harbour any spies, unlike, for example, the bilateral Russian embassy in Uccle, which is a veritable bastion and communication centre for Russian spies in our country.

The Hungarian spies can be found at the Permanent Representation of Hungary to the EU, housed in a large postmodernist office building on Trierstraat in the European quarter.

Is Germany's far-right populist AfD party spying for Russia?

Hans Pfeifer

10/26/2025October 26, 2025

Lawmakers accuse the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party of using its parliamentary powers to gather intelligence on Germany's critical infrastructure to share it with Russia.

Allegations of espionage against the Alternative for Germany (AfD) have been raised by the interior minister of the state of Thuringia. In an interview with Handelsblatt, Social Democrat (SPD) Georg Maier expressed concern that the AfD is abusing its parliamentary powers to gather information about Germany's transport infrastructure, water supply, digital infrastructure and energy supply.

"With its requests, one gets the impression that the AfD is working through a list of tasks assigned by the Kremlin," Maier told the newspaper this week.

He pointed out that the Thuringian branch of the AfD had submitted 47 such inquiries to the state parliament in the past 12 months alone — and with "increasing intensity and depth of detail."

"The AfD is particularly interested in IT and equipment used by the police, for example in the area of drone detection and defense," Maier said. Equipment used in civil protection, health care and Bundeswehr activities are also the subject of inquiries.

In Germany, Kleine Anfragen (literally "small inquiries") are an official parliamentary instrument to help parties obtain information from both federal and state governments that is not publicly available. They are primarily used by opposition parties that do not have direct access to the ministries and authorities of the government apparatus. The governments must respond to the inquiries in writing.

In Thuringia, the state and parliamentary group leader of the AfD is Björn Höcke, who is classified as a confirmed right-wing extremist by the security authorities. Höcke has been previously convicted of using a banned slogan from the Nazi era.

AfD — Praise for Putin's Russia

Höcke has also repeatedly praised President Vladimir Putin's Russia in the past. In a YouTube conversation with AfD politician Maximilian Krah in January 2023 — after the start of Russia's war of against Ukraine — he stated: "Today, whether the mainstream media wants to hear it or not, Russia does not only have negative connotations — it is also a country that some hope could be a champion for a world of free and sovereign states without hegemonic influence."

Höcke has sharply rejected the accusations of the SPD interior minister. In a statement on his Facebook account, he accused Maier of having a problem with the rule of law.

"He has no evidence to back up his claims. He is bothered by the fact that the opposition is doing its constitutional duty: monitoring the work of the government and, if necessary, criticizing it." Questions to the ministries on various issues also help prepare the AfD for assuming government responsibility, Höcke added.

Höcke said his AfD parliamentary group was considering filing a complaint against the interior minister for defamation, and called on Thuringian State Premier Mario Voigt to dismiss Maier.

The AfD is the strongest political force in Thuringia. However, because of its proven links to the far right, all other parties have refused to form an alliance with it. Since last year, the small state has been governed by a coalition of conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), center-left Social Democrats (SPD) and the left-wing populist Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance.

Bundestag: Fear of betrayal of state secrets

But Maier has also received backing from within the federal parliament, the Bundestag. Marc Henrichmann, the chairman of the Bundestag's intelligence oversight committee and a CDU member, told the RND news network: "I firmly believe that Putin is using the AfD as a compliant tool and that party leadership — as much as it claims the contrary — does not have the power to prevent this form of betrayal."

Where do Europe's far-right parties differ?

01:30

Henrichmann pointed out that, due to the same concerns, AfD lawmakers had not been elected to the Bundestag's parliamentary oversight committee. This committee meets exclusively in secret and is responsible for monitoring the work of the federal intelligence services.

The AfD has repeatedly been accused of having close ties to Russia, and numerous AfD members of the Bundestag have maintained close contacts with Putin's circle in the past. AfD Bundestag member Jan Nolte used to write for the Russian propaganda newspaper Izvestia.

Similarly, Markus Frohnmaier, deputy chairman of the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag, was part of the organizing team for the 2018 Yalta International Economic Forum, which was supported by the Russian government and the Russian secret service FSB. In October 2025, Frohnmaier announced his intention to travel to Moscow for political talks. Numerous other party officials have made headlines in the past with statements downplaying Russia's war against Ukraine.

For all these reasons, Maier also wants any motion to ban the party to include "the issue of treason."

"The AfD is not only hostile to the constitution due to its nationalist ideology, but also threatens our liberal democracy through its connections to authoritarian systems," he said.

Bueno pues tienen bien calado al NYT trucho que lo infecta todo.

Yurii Hudymenko, Public Anticorruption Council at Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, stated today that “New York Times journalist Andrew Kramer lied about our organization. The Civil Council has never appealed to Parliament regarding FirePoint drones — such a letter simply does not exist. When we collect sufficient evidence, we forward it directly to law enforcement, not to Parliament. The claim made by The New York Times is a deliberate provocation, and I personally assert that both the journalist and the publication are spreading false information.”
Here’s the NYT article in question: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/26/world/europe/ukraine-fire-point-drones-flamingo.html?unlockedarticlecode=1.w08.v8Fw.TVnQfrwuRmNh&smid=url-share

Andrew Kramer

So the guy from Moscow NYT office who loves to write about Ukrainian "Nazis" (including calling socially left Hudymenko the one), and brags about "reporting both sides of the war, including the pro-Russian rebel side" writes some shit about Ukraine.

Is Russia feeding ChatGPT, Gemini chatbots on Ukraine war? New research says…

Recent AI tolls and next gen tech like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and xAI’s Grok and Google’s Gemini are now seen indulging with the recent political situations. The escalating Russia-Ukraine conflict, and ties linked to pro-Kremlin narratives, according to a new report by WIRED.

According to a new research by Institute of Strategic Dialogue (ISD) these AI chatbots are unintentionally spreading fake and malicious Russian state propaganda.

OpenAI’s credibility and research

The ISD’s team ran 300 queries in five languages, asking the chatbots different questions and instructed biased, neutral and manipulative queries about the peace, mediation talks, and war crimes. Amongst one-fifth of the responses cited Russia-state attributed sources. Roughly about 18 per cent of responses included links or citations from Russian state-affiliated sources such as RT, Sputnik, EADaily, and the Strategic Culture Foundation all banned or sanctioned by the European Union.

Amid the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine and the sanctions imposed on Russia, OpenAI responded that the report referred to its search rather than its core model inputs.

While OpenAI responded to various questions, Google’s Gemini and Deepseek did not comment.

According to WIRED, an analyst at the ISD who led the research said,  “It raises questions regarding how chatbots should deal when referencing these sources, considering many of them are sanctioned in the EU.”

ChatGPT: A popular online platform

After wider researchers, they found a pattern: the more biased the question was, the higher Russia aligned questions were seen and experienced. Malicious words triggered pro-Kremlin responses.

OpenAI spokesperson Kate Waters told WIRED, “The company takes steps to prevent people from using ChatGPT to spread false or misleading information, including such content linked to state-backed actors,” stating that these issues are being addressed to improve the model’s working ability.

As the EU imposes stricter rules on AI tools, ChatGPT’s popularity could soon classify it as a “very large online platform.” It also triggers new obligations to manage risks and harmful content.
