British Minister: Russian fighter jet fixed with tape
The image of Russian adversity in Ukraine is growing stronger day by day. The British defense minister claims that Russian fighter pilots have been forced to tape civilian GPSs in the plan to find their targets.
The traditional victory parade through Moscow on May 9 featured long lines of tanks, artillery pieces and soldiers in well-pressed uniforms. But unlike previous years, the air force was completely missing at this year's Russian show of strength. Something that Russian authorities have explained with uncertain weather conditions.
The British Minister of Defense Ben Wallace is now launching another statement, which suggests that the Russian air force is in a much worse condition than has been known.
"Shoot-down Russian SU-34s (a Russian fighter jet, editor's note) have been found where the pilots taped GPSs on the dashboard," Ben Wallace said in a speech at the London Army Museum on Monday.
Ever since the war in Ukraine began, experts have been surprised that Russia has not achieved air domination, and that many of the attacks targeting ground targets have been carried out with poor precision and older types of bombs.
Poor navigation equipment could be an explanation for that, says military strategic expert Stefan Ring to SvD. He himself has a background in the air force.
- The information is a bit in line with what we heard earlier about the Russian ability. Among other things, missiles used by Russia have been examined and it has been established that almost all electronic equipment was of Western origin. This may indicate a limited ability to manufacture that equipment in the country, says Stefan Ring.
Information that Russian fighter pilots are dependent on civilian GPSs taped or screwed into the military planes already appeared in August 2021 in connection with the war in Syria, in which Russia participated on the side of government troops.
In that case, it should be a big limitation, according to Stefan Ring:
- In modern aircraft with built-in navigation systems, the GPS is connected to the weapon systems. Otherwise you lose all precision. In addition, you lose navigational ability, he concludes.
The British Secretary of Defense listed several other shortcomings that were discovered in the Russian forces in his speech. Truck wheels that exploded due to poor maintenance, cars reinforced with tree branches instead of armor sheets and soldiers who only received maps drawn in the 1980s before being sent to the front.
"The consequence of this is that while Russia is parading with the artillery and armor they like to display, they are unable to carry out coordinated operations with different types of weapons," Ben Wallace said in his speech.
